Women in Entertainment
In 2018, only 19% of festival artists were female.
Despite over 150 events aiming for 50% of their lineups to consist of female artists by 2022, women in music haven’t made a ton of progress in the last two years. Forbes’ 2019 Top 15 Highest Paid DJs list featured no women and as recent as a few weeks ago, Beatport’s Top 10 tracks list didn’t feature any tracks by female producers.
In this week’s episode of Do What You Can For The People, I chat with Fatima Reynolds about the challenges that female artists face and some of the ways that music industry execs, other DJs, and even listeners/attendees can help shift the needle towards equity.
Fátima is a dear friend of mine. By day she’s a non-profit manager... by night she’s a music enthusiast and badass femme DJ. She’s a resident for 3 collectives: Nomadic Rabbit Hole in NYC, Deep Tech & Groove Syndicate in DC. And in case all of that isn’t enough… Fátima, myself and a group of our lady friends co-founded Boobs & Beats. Fátima’s been next leveling Boobs & Beats to include workshops, open decks & networking for women in the music industry.
