Green Beauty
Every year, 120 billion units of cosmetics packaging are produced.
And much of that packaging is not recyclable because it is either too small or made of mixed materials. According to the LCA Centre, a Netherlands-based group that studies the environmental impact of packaging, some 70% of carbon emissions attributable to the beauty industry could be eliminated if people simply used refillable containers.
The environmental impact of the beauty industry goes beyond packaging - there are supply chain considerations around ingredient sourcing, working conditions, and more. The term ‘green beauty’ has been around for a while, but there are so many different definitions of it!
In this week’s episode of Do What You Can For The People, I chat with my good friend and green beauty expert Maggie Spicer on how to decipher all the green claims in the beauty industry, ways to exercise our buyer power, sustainable innovations for cosmetic packaging, and a simple DIY hand scrub made from ingredients in your pantry.
Maggie is a badass lawyer and also the mastermind behind The Green Beauty Guide - a blog dedicated to sustainability and natural beauty.
